My skincare routine involves five active days and two rest days. Much like an exercise routine where your body needs rest, so too does your skin when using actives.

This is particularly true when using retinol products. The skin definitely needs some TLC days.

Active Days:

On my five active days I use a strong Vitamin C serum in the form of ascorbic acid during the day and I use a chemical exfoliant (AHA/BHA) followed by a retinol in the evenings.

My skin tolerates this routine really well and in general I can blast my skin with very active products without sensitising it.

However my skin will eventually feel like it needs a break. So instead of waiting until it has become sensitised or dry I structure my routine to include rest days.

Rest Days:

I still use my Vitamin C serum in the mornings on the rest days because it is so important for sun protection. Vitamin C is also a product that I have found that I can use daily without any irritation.

In the evening on my 2 rest days which I usually do consecutively, I avoid exfoliating my face and use a facial oil before bed. I figure I have been making my skin work hard and it deserves some pampering.

This routine allows me to keep using really active products without getting any irritation and thereby getting the ultimate benefits from my actives.

My all time favourite facial oil for this purpose is Sunday Riley Juno Oil. I started using it in 2016 and I have repurchased it so many times. It is full of skin nourishing goodness and it is gentle and soothing.
