During my career working as a skincare consultant I was asked certain questions a lot, one of them was “Do you sell any skincare products for men?”. Both female and male customers would ask this to which I would reply that all of the skincare was suitable for men.

Men often felt very uncomfortable in what they perceived as a very feminine space and they would come in with real skin concerns and genuinely want to improve their skin or fix a particular problem. But the majority of men and the majority of women buying for men would only consider the men’s line of a particular brand. They wanted the masculine packaging, they wanted it to say MEN boldly on the packaging and were unknowingly going to end up buying an inferior product.

Most brands have an add-on line. If you think about something like women’s apparel they often have a children’s line that is usually overpriced, pretty poor quality and one would be better off sourcing something that was actually invented for children. Similarity health supplement companies making protein powders often have a range for women that is often packaged in pink or other feminine packaging or uses the word “slim” to appeal to women. The actual quality of the women’s protein powder is usually poorer ingredient wise than the standard range.

This is how I view the men’s skincare range of major skincare brands. It is an afterthought. Some poor quality product with less potent, less effective ingredients, in masculine packaging. Do not sell yourself short you’re worth it too.

Skincare products work just the same and just as effectively on men’s skin as women’s. Men should incorporate a suitable cleanser for their skin type. A lot of men do require a fuss-free skincare regime and often do not enjoy a nightly ritual of applying ten different products and that is ok. Shower friendly cleansers are perfect for a quick routine. Then a targeted serum – vitamin C and hydration for daytime and vitamin A for nighttime followed by a moisturiser. If this is too fussy then just cleanse and moisturise as a bare minimum.

Now after saying all of this, I do realise that some men will have a particular masculine aesthetic to their own bathroom and I would not dream of messing with that. I love the brand Perricone for a sleek, masculine skincare line. Note it is not made for men it is made for humans but men dig the packaging.

Dr Perricone is a dermatologist and author of several books, one of my favourites is called “The Wrinkle Cure”. He also invented around 100 patents in skincare.

Perricone products are preservative free and are therefore packaged in dark glass bottles that are made with copper which acts as a natural preservative. They are shower friendly (pump action) and they look very nice in any bathroom.

Skincare that works and has masculine packaging for the discerning man:

Perricone MD

I am a former published International glamour model whose career in modelling has allowed me to work closely with dermatologists, dermal clinicians and make-up artists. After retiring from modelling I worked in the skin care industry as a skincare consultant and this work evoked a real passion to help other people look and feel their best and understand their skincare needs. This role also involved travelling internationally to meet with industry experts and niche brands that I grew to really love. During my modelling career in particular, I was frustrated by having a combination/oily skin type that made it difficult to get through photoshoots without having make-up wearing off and developing a shiny forehead and nose. I battled problematic skin during this time with breakouts and dehydration and tried everything from skincare and treatments recommended by dermatologists, to skin care that I found in cosmetic stores. During my career working as a skincare consultant I tried a colossal amount of products myself, listened to feedback from my customers and finally discovered not only a solution to my own skincare concerns but a philosophy about skincare which I am passionate to share with you. My aim is to share this knowledge and demystify skincare for my readers and share my simple, common sense approach to making your skin work for you
